The watch
Few watches have done more quiet, reliable work than the Datejust, and this one has the patina of a watch that earned its keep. A 1978 Rolex Datejust 36, reference 16013, it pairs a 36mm two-tone gold and steel case with a warm Champagne dial, the combination that has defined the reference's enduring appeal.
The 36mm case is executed in two-tone gold and steel, the archetypal Datejust formula that threads a yellow-gold fluted bezel against brushed and polished steel. It is mounted on a Jubilee bracelet, the five-link design conceived for the Datejust in 1945 and still the dressiest way to wear a Rolex, drawing the gold accents down the wrist.
The Champagne dial warms under light, a soft metallic gold tone that flatters the two-tone case and softens the sportier edges of the fluted bezel. It is a classic pairing, restrained enough for a boardroom and never shy about the gold.
This reference is driven by the automatic caliber 3035, the movement that introduced Rolex's quickset date and a higher 28,800 beat rate to the Datejust line. The seller notes that the caseback was not opened and the caliber was therefore not independently confirmed, though it is the expected movement for the reference.
This Rolex Datejust 36 remains in pre-owned condition and wears like a watch that was used rather than cosseted. The seller reports light scratches consistent with normal wear, one or two barely visible marks on the crystal catchable only at an angle, and minimal bracelet stretch, with no dents or dings to the case or bracelet. According to the seller, the crystal material has not been confirmed as acrylic or sapphire. The seller reports the watch was serviced by Watch Hospital in March 2026, with all parts confirmed as original Rolex and a service warranty running through March 2027.
The watch is offered with an eBay Authenticity Guarantee card dated 01/31/2026, which the seller states it passed on inspection, alongside the Watch Hospital service warranty card 33-2395 covering the March 2026 service through March 2027. No original box or papers are included.
